Founded in 1985 under the patronage of the SOS Children's Villages organization—established by the Austrian philanthropist Prof. Hermann Gmeiner to provide parental care and support to orphaned and abandoned children worldwide—the school originally opened its doors to serve the children residing in the SOS Children's Village. Today, it stands as a prestigious government 1AB eco-friendly school in the Piliyandala Education Zone, educating over 1,000 students from both the SOS Children's Village and the surrounding local community. Prof. Hermann Gmeiner's noble vision has inspired 191 Hermann Gmeiner schools across the globe, including 58 in the Asian region. This institution holds the unique distinction of being the only Hermann Gmeiner School established in Sri Lanka.

Designed by the renowned Sri Lankan architect Anjalendran, the school features a distinctive architectural identity that sets it apart from traditional school designs across the island, seamlessly blending aesthetic appeal with a natural learning environment.

Driven by targeted performance development programs led by a dedicated academic staff, the school consistently achieves outstanding results across all national examinations. Beyond academic excellence, students actively secure top honors in co-curricular and extracurricular activities at the national level. Recognized as a pioneering smart school under the "Digital Iskole" initiative, Hermann Gmeiner School has consecutively won national-level best practice awards in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
